RSAWEB supports WordPress conference in Cape Town

Earlier this month Cape Town’s finest WordPress developers and gurus descended on the V&A Waterfront to participate in WordCamp Cape Town. We were very excited to get on board as the title sponsor and to ensure that the WiFi was flowing freely for all to access.

We thought it was imperative to get involved with WordCamp as we have a long history and passion for hosting WordPress websites – everything from small personal blogs to media companies publishing content on a large scale. WordCamp has an amazing global reputation as the premier WordPress community event, and enabling this type of event to come to South Africa is a great way to support the local WordPress community.

We’ve used WordPress for many years – we’ve tried others, but WordPress remains the top performer – from the increase speed and the much improved API for the all-important widget-creators, to the ease at which we’ve been able to assist our customers scale their sites to cope with high volumes of pageviews, WordPress doesn’t fail us.

For those who are unfamiliar with WordCamps, they are informal community-organised conferences that focuses on everything WordPress. Established in San Fransisco in 2006, local communities worldwide have organised over 100 WordCamps – this being the second one hosted in Cape Town.

Two wins for Team RSAWEB in Pro Classic Spring Series

The men of Team RSAWEB had a very busy and successful weekend with stage 2 and 3 of the Pro Classic Spring Series being held on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Saturday saw the second stage of the series, the Hill Climb, an approximate 2.2km individual hill climb whereby cyclists climb from the bottom of Malanshoogte to the top. Team RSAWEB rider, Jos Le Roux, took first place and fellow team rider, Edward Greene secured 3rd place – a mere 1 second off the pace, and 0.1 second short of 2nd place.

After leading the Team Competition after Stage 1 (Orbit Tour de Worcester), Team RSAWEB entered the next stage with a firm grip on the competition. Jos’ win also gave him enough points for the General Classification lead and thus receiving the Pink Leader’s Jersey.

Sunday’s Circuit Race was a challenging course for the Team, amidst wind and undulating terrain. Team RSAWEB had 3 riders representing to defend Jos’ lead and control the peloton. Late in the second lap, a convincing group – which had Team RSAWEB rider, Edward Greene, in the mix – broke away and managed to stay away. This group fragmented before the finish line, and it was Edward that put himself in the lead to secure the win.

Back in the peloton, Jos – in the Leader’s Jersey – managed his own break away in pursuit of the lead break. He soloed for two and a half laps without catching that break, but managed to claim 7th position for the day – enough to comfortably defend his points lead of the Pink Leader’s Jersey.

An overall successful day with all Team RSAWEB riders finishing well and defending their lead in the Team Competition.

The Aca Joe Pro Classic Spring Series continues with Stage 4 on 23 October 2011 for the Tiletoria West Coast Express race, but in the interim Team RSAWEB will be focusing on a few national races.

First podium position for the season at Tour De Worcester

As with any stage race (like the Tour de France) there is competition within competition. Some race just for the stage win, while others race for the overall win. Last weekend, Team RSAWEB lined up for the Orbit Tour de Worcester – first race of the 2011 Aca Joe Pro Classic Spring Series – and kicked off the season with a 3rd place podium position for Jos Le Roux, and 5th place position for team mate Robert Quinn.

Team RSAWEB rider, Jos Le Roux, shares the team’s experience:

On this warm, sunny day for 98km Team RSAWEB spared no energy attacking to get a successful break off the front of the peloton. By half way, 7 riders formed this successful break and opened a 2 minute gap. Once through the 3.2 km dirt section (a shallow climb), the break was down to 4 riders: Jos Le Roux (Team RSAWEB), Leonardo Van Onselen, Danie Marais and Theuns Van Der Bank.

In the chase-group, teams that had missed out were in pursuit of the break. Over the dirt section the peloton split, but then shortly rejoined once on the tar again.

Jos could feel the peloton creeping back to the break (now at 30 seconds) and made a large effort over the final 12km to assist the break. This in turn weakened his sprint against his companions and managed 3rd place for the stage. This, however, has kept Jos in close contention going into the next stage.

As the bunch came in to finish, 30 seconds behind the break, Team RSAWEB lead out the field. Robert Quinn (Team RSAWEB) claimed a small win with 5th place, which has given Team RSAWEB the lead in the team competition, and again, going into the next state, the team is in a strong position.

Make Internet history with your very own TLD

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has opened up the Internet and by introducing future of the Domain Name System – generic top level domains (gTLDs). Aside from the 22 generic TLDs currently in existence, which are the .com, . net, .org, and so forth; and the 250 country codes, “established” companies now have the option to customise their domain needs, for example www.cloudservers.rsaweb.

ICANN identifies “established” companies as:

“Established corporations, organisations, or institutions in good standing may apply for a new gTLD. Applications from individuals or sole proprietorships will not be considered. Applications from or on behalf of yet-to-be formed legal entities, or applications presupposing the future formation of a legal entity (for example, a pending Joint Venture) will not be considered.”
