Free Auto-Dynamic DNS moves to Beta phase

Auto-Dynamic DNSRSAWeb ADSL customers can now test an easy to use Auto-Dynamic DNS facility that requires no client software to use.

Dynamic DNS allows a name to be updated on a regular basis for internet connections that change their public IP address often. This allows various services to work more efficiently. For example, RSAWeb Engineers use this functionality to connect to remote sites for maintenance, instead of having to try and connect to a dynamic (changing) IP address each time, dynamic DNS converts an easy name into the IP. This name stays the same but the IP address changes regularly.

All RSAWeb customers have easy access to this functionality by port-locking their ADSL connection through the MyRSAWeb control panel. Port-locking has the added advantage of allowing your username and password to work only on your ADSL line. The DNS name will be issued to you from MyRSAWeb.

In the past to use dynamic DNS you had to install client software on the customers server, this usually fairly unreliable due as the service connected to international servers, this meant that any disruption in international connectivity meant the dynamic DNS didnt update causing loss of connectivity, lost email and making it more difficult to manage remote sites.

All RSAWeb Capped ADSL accounts include free Dynamic DNS.

ADSL upload speed moving to 640kbps soon

ADSL SpeedADSL in South Africa has been around since 2003 but uptake by consumers and business was really spurred when the download speed was increased to “up to 4Mbps”. This download speed represented a huge improvement on the 1Mbps product previously available. ADSL was more useful and more applications that required this type of bandwidth encouraged sales along with larger investment in infrastructure roll out by ISP’s and Telkom. Although the download speed was 4Mbps, the upload speed was limited to 384kbps. This is about to change with Telkom conducting trials in March were they have upgraded the upload speed of the 4Mbps product to 640Kbps.

This upload speed increase looks imminent and could be rolled out as soon as April, should the limited trial prove successful in March. This opens the door of opportunity for applications such as VOIP and VPN’s that require syncronised upload and download speeds, and effectively doubles the amount of bandwidth available for these types of services.

No more free modems with Telkom’s self install ADSL

Telkom ADSL ModemAll new ADSL customers will need to purchase their modem now, even when doing a self install. Telkom previously ran a special, that gave a free modem to all clients who made use of the self install option, regardless of which ISP they purchased their bandwidth from. The special ran from Febuary 2007 till the 31st August this year.

The ADSL self install option allows you to get your ADSL line setup quicker & faster than before because a Telkom engineer doesnt have to come to your premises. The self install option is still available and I would still recommend it in order to fasttrack your ADSL line installation, however you will need to purchase a modem.

Speak to an RSAWeb consultant to get advice on ADSL modems and how to aquire one with your RSAWEB ADSL service.

SuperDSL – new ADSL shaped & unshaped packages

Over the last few months we have been beta testing our new SuperDSL service. The new ADSL offering uses the Saix backbone and allows RSAWEB clients to easily setup more cost effective ADSL accounts. Our existing ADSL products are now called PremiumDSL and will continue as before.

We have also completed a brand new interface upgrade in MYRSAWEB for SuperDSL that boasts the following:

  1. Better bandwidth graphs
  2. Notification options
  3. Top up bandwidth
  4. Port locking

The new interface has been enabled on all SuperDSL packages and will be rolled out to PremiumDSL later this month.

You can now order all SuperDSL and PremiumDSL packages from within MYRSAWEB.
