RSAWEB is proud to be a silver sponsor of the non-profit initiative Net Prophet, a free conference geared towards inspiring and equipping technology entrepreneurs, which takes place on the 13th of May 2010 at the Old Mutual Campus Courtyard, West Campus, Mutual Park.

The event, which is hosted by the RAMP Foundation, brings together the most innovative / successful / creative / ambitious thinkers and entrepreneurs in the local Internet space, to share their stories, ideas and predictions for the future. The event is not just for people within the tech industry, but is beneficial for anyone who has web-based business interests.

RSAWEB Soccer Clinic

With 2010 just round the corner, we were inspired to invest in South Africa’s future soccer stars. To achieve this, we partnered with Upward Sports to provide a soccer clinic for the children of the Ocean View community in Cape Town. Some of our office super stars also pitched in to lend some of their skills to the clinic…

RSAWEB TV was on hand to cover the action. Take a look…

NetProphet an outstanding success

Netprophet

Feedback from the NetProphet conference has exceeded all our expectations. Originally planned as a 100 delegate conference, then 200, it quickly expanded to 450 registered users, so much so that registration had to be closed! On the day an extra row of chairs had to be put out to accomodate all the delegates.

The speakers were fantastic, they also managed to keep the topics less technical and more informative so it wasnt just another geek event. The appeal was across industries, not just IT. They shared insights into what they do with real world examples of their experiences and advice on how to build your own web-enabled business. The content from the event will be posted with video and slides on the Netprophet website to allow more people access to the excellent content.

Some comments: Arthur Goldstuck said “I have never seen so many people at an Internet Conference before”, Peter Flynn said “All software will ultimately be web-based” and Mike Stopforth“How conferences in SA should be run”

RSAWEB was one of the headline sponsors to make NetProphet possible, along with sister company WhiteWallWeb and the Innovation Fund. There is talk that Cape Town has become the “Silicon Cape” – the Silicon Valley of Africa and NetProphet has helped enable that!

Twitter was also a major success factor in the conference, with a twitter fountain pulling up all the #Netprophet tags. We managed to ‘trend’ into the Top 10 and got to be the 2nd most talked about topic on twitter in the world for over 2 hours.

NetProphet was conceived by the Directors of the RAMP Foundation and is a new initiative created to inspire creativity and the flow of ideas among entrepreneurs and stake-holders who operate in the internet-tech space in Africa & South Africa.

If you missed the event this year, go and register now on the Netprophet website for updates around the next event.

Twilight Running

Community Chest Twilight RunMany of us at RSAWEB enjoy a 5Km run around the block from time to time however call it a race and the competitive spirit in all of us comes out. Last week the RSAWEB staff headed down to the Community Chest Twilight run through the streets of Cape Town. This annual event is always fun with 3 180 teams entered in 2008, which meant there were about 19 080 entrants all in fancy dress.

The run finishes with a stunning final straight down Adderley Street under the Christmas lights to the finish line and the corporate tents with braai’s and drinks to end off an awesome evening.

Well done to Vern who burst out of the blocks and achieved second place overall.

Meghann Leo from the Community Chest said that the race had been “stunning” and that R524 700 was raised. Well done to everyone who participated

RSAWEB helps fight Xenophobia

Last week the horror of xenophobic attacks that had been gripping the country spread to Cape Town. With more than 18 000 foreign nationals displaced from their homes scared, cold, tired and hungry. Our staff decided to do something about it. Bianca Clavaux our HR coordinator had this to say “we just don’t realize how blessed we are and so many of our staff felt this was a time for us bless others in real need”. So within a few hours on Monday morning our staff helped raise R6 998 , then along with our other partner companies we matched each rand contributed by the staff, so in total we had R13 996.

A quick call to the Red Cross, (who have been doing really excellent work in rallying together volunteers and resources) and we had a shopping list of what was most needed. To fight the freezing cold Capewind we needed blankets, Makro said they had 194 in stock…..we bought them all! A while later and we had stacked 1221 tins of food. All in all this was 2 bakkie loads of goods, with no more space left we were off to the Wynberg Red Cross where we were met by a bunch of totally stoked volunteers who helped us offload all the goods, later to be distributed across the Cape Town area to those who needed it most.

Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative, if you would like to help fight xenophobia please contact the Red Cross via their website.
