What are "Cloud Servers"?

RSAWEB Cloud Servers allows the user to provision a server in minutes, and upgrade or downgrade a server in seconds. Control and flexibility through our unique Control Panel is the core of RSAWEB Cloud Servers. Each server allows the user full Root/admin access, and a selection of several operating systems to choose from.

Do I still get billed if I do not use my server?

Any server which is not deleted consumes reserved space and resources within the Cloud, whether it is running or not. Therefore, if you have not deleted your server, you will be billed.

What’s the difference between a Cloud server and a dedicated server?

Cloud servers are the next generation of dedicated servers. With dedicated servers, the users have to wait hours, even days, for a RAM upgrade or for a new dedicated server to be ordered. With Cloud servers, the user can provision an entire fleet of servers within minutes.

RSAWEB Cloud Servers unique Control Panel is highly advanced which permits the users to create, start, stop, reboot, change IP addresses, view stats, console into the server and much more, at a price they would normally pay for dedicated servers.

Are Cloud servers merely VPS (Virtual Private Server)?

No. Cloud servers differ substantially from VPS due to underlying technology. The advanced RSAWEB Cloud Servers Manager ensures that the cluster is operating efficiently, dynamically balances the resource utilisation and monitors every server. In the event that a host (physical machine) is overloaded, servers are automatically migrated to other hosts - with no downtime!

We are able to do this as all our users’ data sits on our SAN’s (Storage Area Networks). The difference is that on a VPS should a host run out of capacity, the user’s server must be copied to another physical server, which means hours of downtime. With RSAWEB Cloud Servers, we are able to move the user’s server, with no downtime, in approximately 1 minute.

Should a VPS experience a physical problem, i.e. RAM fault, all the VPS’s on that specific machine must be shut down for maintenance. With RSAWEB Cloud Servers, the host is put into ‘maintenance mode’, and live migrates all running Cloud servers to other hosts. This results in 100% uptime from the RSAWEB Cloud Servers.

Is bandwidth free between my servers?

At RSAWEB, we love giving our customers great value – so yes, bandwidth is free between the user’s servers. The user needs to make use of the internal IP facilities by ordering the free “Internal IP” add-on through the RSAWEB Cloud Servers Control Panel, and may then use the “IP Manager” to assign internal IPs to each of their servers.

The user must remember to use the Internal IPs when communicating between servers for transfers, connections, database connections, etc – Connection will then be up to gigabit speeds.

How do I scale/upgrade my Cloud server?

It’s easy! Login to the Control Panel, select the server, hit ‘Upgrade’ and choose a new package. The server will shutdown, upgraded and then come back online automatically. This process usually takes less than 1 minute.

How much CPU time does my Cloud servers get?

RSAWEB Cloud Server hosts are based on the Cloud ready Intel Nehalem Dual Quad Core Xeon processors. Every Cloud server has a weighted amount of CPU, based upon the size of the server. For example: A 2GB server has twice as much processing as a 1GB server. These are the minimum guarantees. Should more processing be available – which is most likely the case, as not many people run their server at 100% - the user will be able to boost their server into the unused CPU.

What Operating Systems (OS) are currently supported?

The following OS’s are currently available:

  • Ubuntu 9.10 64bit
  • Ubuntu 9.10 64bit + LAMP
  • CentOS 64bit
  • Debian 64bit

We are currently in the process of making the following OS’s available:

  • Linux with LAMP
  • Linux with LAMP + Control Panel
  • Windows 2008 (Web/Standard) 64bit
  • Linux Distro’s in 32bit

Should you have any suggestions or requests, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Can I upload or download my own server image?

Unfortunately, not at the present moment. However, our development team is feverishly working to bring higher priority features to our users.

I’ve locked myself out of my server, how do I obtain access again?

Login into the RSAWEB Cloud Server and utilise the console facility to connect to the server. (This is the same as sitting in front of the screen at the server.)

What support is available?

RSAWEB Cloud Servers are controlled entirely by the user. Should the user experience any problems with the service, simply log a support ticket in the Control Panel. Should the query be urgent, contact the Helpdesk on +27 21 462 6798. Should it be a ‘server down emergency’, follow the voice prompts and the user will be connected to an engineer. Please note this is only in the case of an emergency.

Our engineers are available on a consulting basis, should additional assistance with configuring a server be required.

How much technical knowledge do I need to have?

RSAWEB Cloud Servers are very easy to set-up and run – it requires almost no experience. Remember, this is a managed service and the user is responsible for managing the server. We do however offer additional support and consulting.

Should I firewall my server?

Yes! We suggest running IP Tables or a similar firewall.

How secure is my server?

Security is highly important! We do not store a user’s Root password in any of our databases, and neither do our engineers have access to a user’s server. Should a user request assistance from our engineers, we will reset the Root password in order to conduct the work. Once the ticket is closed, the user may reset their Root password again. The user will receive email notification every time a Root password reset is performed.

Cloud servers are as secure as a dedicated server. The user must remember to lock their firewall down and use secure passwords. We strongly suggest the password is at least 6 characters, mixed with capitals, symbols, etc.

Where are the RSAWEB Cloud Server clusters?

Currently we are only providing Cloud Servers clusters in Cape Town, South Africa. We will soon launch a US or UK based Cloud.

Please send us your preference - we would like to hear your feedback!

How are backups handled?

All data is backed up daily at 03h00 local cluster time. We backup the full machine. Should the user require a file restore, we will charge to recover the server and create a separate Cloud server. This will however change in future versions of RSAWEB Cloud Servers, with integrated backup and restore facilities within the Control Panel.

For all database applications, we suggest the user does an automated database backup on the server between 22h00 and 02h00 to dump the data to a file, which ensures higher consistency.

Should the user wish to have a more dynamic file level backup, they may review the RSAWEB Online Backup.

Billing information

  • Services run monthly and are billed in advance. If you cancel a server after the 20th you will still be billed for the following month. We currently don't offer hourly or daily billing options.
  • Traffic overage is calculated from the 21st to 20th of each month and billed on the invoice that is generated thereafter.

How does the billing work?

All users are billed for their servers on the 21st (business day dependant) for the following month. Excess traffic is calculated from the 21st to the 20th of each month, the user’s excess traffic rate is applicable, and the invoice is due by the 1st of the following month. If the user is billed by credit card, this will be actioned on the 1st of every month.

What payments methods are available?

  • Credit card (all users) – VISA & MasterCard
  • Debit order (South Africans with verified bank accounts)

Who makes the RSAWEB Cloud Control Panel?

RSAWEB Cloud Servers have been built by a highly skilled team at RSAWEB, using the latest virtualisation, storage, networking and programming technologies.

Can I run my own DNS (Domain Name System)?

Yes! However, we suggest utilising our geographically independent DNS servers for best performance and resiliency. It is easier to use ours as it is tightly integrated into our systems, and it’s easy to setup the DNS via our Control Panel.

How can I register a domain?

Easily! Through MyRSAWEB, the user must login with their RSAWEB Cloud Server username and password, and simply order a ‘DNS Hosting’.
