Anchor Text

Anchor text is the text that is you use/display within the HTML link. The anchor text that you use should accurately describe the page that you are linking to. This will increase its relevance.

Anchor text is VITAL to keywords and also to links. Make sure you have relevant keywords as your anchor text in your internal links and also inbound links.

Other SEO items

Sitemaps – You should have two sitemaps, one in HTML for humans to read and one in XML for Google etc to read. The HTML one is a standard page on your site with a link to it from the homepage called ‘sitemap’ and it has a link to every page on your site with the title as the anchor text. Use www.google.com/webmaster - this is a good resource.

RSS Feeds – RSS your news, by default if you use Wordpress or similar blogging application to run your website, RSS should be available as standard. Google will pick this up and be able to read your news easily, getting you listed further up the rankings.

Broken links – don’t have links on your website to pages that are broken. Search engines can possibly view this as a poorly maintained site and penalize you.

Menus – avoid javascript if you can or use DIV’s with Google friendly javascripting. Your developer should be able to assist you with this.

Google Advanced Stats – avoid javascript if you can or use DIV’s with Google friendly javascripting. Your developer should be able to assist you with this.
