I am most impressed with the excellent service I have received from placing my order for a 24 Month contract online and the procedure that followed thereafter. This order was placed on Tuesday, today Thursday, and I just received my Modem!

Search Engine Optimisation - What is all the fuss about? Part 3 - Backlinks

Your rank on a search engine is dependant on how relevant other people think your website is. This is determined by how many people/websites ‘link’ to you.

Before you rush off and ask people to link to you, there are some do’s and dont’s. We will use an example of a tourism company that does whitewater rafting.

Do’s:
  1. Get people in the same industry to link to you. Use local travel agents, local directories of things to do, local tourist websites etc. These are called ‘inbound links’. These inbound links should be linking using keywords like ‘whitewater rafting’
  2. Inbound links must have ‘anchor text’ so they don’t just display your name or your website name (URL) and rather link with a relevant keyword to a relevant page on your site, either you main page or a few sub pages.
  3. Write articles relevant for your industry and get them to link back to you. You can submit articles online at places like www.prweb.com and other people might pick them up and use them giving you a backlink.
  4. Write good news articles for your website – do this regularly – people will want to read your news and will start linking to it.
  5. List yourself on www.dmoz.org in your relevant category
  6. If you have a South African website, go to http://www.ananzi.co.za/Add_site and add your site
  7. Get bloggers to link to your site – add relevant content contact bloggers who you think would be interested in your industry and get them to blog about you.
Dont’s:
  1. Do link exchanges where people link to you and you must link to them in return
  2. List on random websites that don’t have relevant content
  3. Link to arbitrary pages within your site that aren’t optimized.
  4. DO NOT use Google’s ‘add site’ function on their website. Sites tend to get ‘sandboxed’ and sometimes don’t appear for months on Googles search results.
  5. Crosslink – crosslinking is setting up multiple sites that link to each other to try to increase your sites links / popularity.

How to check your backlinks

Checking backlinks is relatively easy. Backlinks are your inbound links to your website from another website.

You can go to www.google.com and search for “link:http://www.rsaweb.co.za”

This will give you an idea, I must stress idea of what your backlinks are. Google will not list all of them necessarily.

To find out all your backlinks do the same search at www.alltheweb.com
