ScaleConf 2016

ScaleConf is a two-day tech conference in Cape Town, inspired by the CodeConf and DevOpsDays events in America. ScaleConf brings together local and international experts to share their ideas on the problems faced by companies and individuals building and running services on the Internet today. The focus of the event is to cover the culture and methodologies used to architect and develop the strong foundations required to operate websites and services.

I had the pleasure of attending ScaleConf for the second year running, and it is a rare opportunity for all technical personnel to be able to learn what the latest buzzwords are with regards to scaling large systems, hint: (containers, containers everywhere!).

 

 

We’ve undertaken similar ventures with regards to scaling out our large monolithic application with great success, and have received valuable validation in terms of what others are doing in similar situations, it feels good to know we on the right track!

 

The talks although not all technical, some were even (well masked) sales pitches, were very informative. Lots of valuable tips and strategies were shared, all useful in guiding other teams when doing similar systems at such a large scale.

 

A few key take-outs that we found valuable from the event were

 

• A ‘fail whale’ is just a bad stack! make sure you can scale automatically. This why we recommend Enterprise Cloud (Virtual Data Centre) to ensure your infrastructure is secure, blazing fast and infinitely scalable.

 

• Try new things! A lot of developers want to build beautiful abstract architecture, but they should really be reacting to their business’ strategy.

 

Bringing international and local experts together to talk about their experience building sites and services that can handle the rigours of today’s Internet is incredibly valuable for those of us who are working in this industry. Much fun was had with our #iPityDaFool Cloud Twitter competition and it was a great way to connect with people can discuss our Cloud offerings.
