Team RSAWEB wins West Coast Express

October 25, 2010

The second race of the Pro Classic Series took place this past Sunday, with Team RSAWEB taking first place, extending our lead at the top of the leader board after 2 (out of 5) races.

The West Coast Express race, held in Sunningdale , is a 85km route that follows the West Coast Road, past Atlantis all the way to the Mamre’ turnoff, where a right turn took cyclists up the only hill of the course. The course joins with the 65km route and then takes the West Coast Road back through Melkbos, along the beachfront and into Big Bay, with the finish line at Cormorant Avenue.

Robert Quinn of Team RSAWEB gives us the 411 on the West Coast Express:

We are very pleased to announce that Martin Wesemann mastered a win for Team RSAWEB, secured a (small) time difference from the other podium holders, and kept the Leader’s Jersey firmly in the hands of Team RSAWEB. Team CTM (despite their near disqualification) secured 2nd place, with Cape Storm at 3rd, and another Team RSAWEB member (me) taking 4th place.

We started off with a heavy attacking strategy, with riders off the front several times, and at one point, 3 Team RSAWEB members had brief attacks, which caused havoc in the bunch. Team RSAWEB unfortunately split at the climb, approximately mid-way in the race, where we lost Joshua (in the pink Leader’s Jersey). Our opponents then took every possible chance to attack, but we defended every move. At this stage, we were only 2 strong in the front of the lead bunch, as we had sent another rider back to assist Joshua in rejoining.

Our defense tactics proved invaluable, resulting in a great overall race for Team RSAWEB – retaining the Leader’s Jersey, and remaining in top position of the Elites Team division.
